Some of the Successful Transit  Projects LED SMART Has Worked on With Our Partners

AMTRAK LEDSmart LED READING Light upgrad

Amtrak

In 2016 Amtrak tasked LED Smart to design and produce a custom made LED Reading light. The new light had to be robust, easy to handle, long lasting, ultra narrow beam and above all, very low wattage.

LED Smart met all of these challenges. The newly designed LED Reading Lamp offers Amtrak a whopping 90% energy savings. This savings allowed Amtrak free up some power consumption fo some newly added technology, like Wi-Fi.

These newly designed lamps unique shape is purposeful, allowing the maintenance crew to handle the installation of this little lamp with ease, without any special tools.

The illumination pattern is also an ultra narrow beam, projecting the desire light directly onto the desired seat. Allowing for each user to operate their reading light without disturbing their seat mate.

LEDSmart LED Upgrade MTA NYCT (5) (3).jp

New York City, MTA

The New York City Transit department uses LED Smart, custom LED lighting system to retrofit their Alstom, Bombardier and Kawasaki R142, R142A, and R160 cars. MTA NYCT is in the process of retrofitting these 3,138 cars with the best in LED technology, the LED Smart RLR Series.

Custom designed 28" lamps were produced with a 'star' power end cap, unique to MTA. As well as two other more standard rail sizes, in 48" and 72" lamps. Replacing over 22,600 lamps thus far.

The retrofit performed so far will see a savings of over 400,000W, which is estimated to save approximately almost $280,000 per year* on electricity alone. Additional savings will be seen in reduced maintenance labor costs over the expected 5-7 year lifetime. Riders have commented that the refitted car have a much cleaner and brighter appearance.

PHILADELPHIA

SAFETY One objective of SEPTA's is to have a brightly lit, well maintained stations. The newly retrofitted stations are bright and feel safer to the riders and staff. Comments from the officers state that the cameras are able to see all of the station, with no areas in 'dark spots'.

MAINTENANCE Another objective of SEPTA's is to have well maintained stations. Effectively to reduce the rate of maintenance in the stations, and reduce the number of lights that burn out. This is achieved with the long life of the LED lighting system that is designed to outlast the previous fluorescent system.

COST SAVINGS The other clear advantage to retrofitting to LED lighting is the reduced power consumption. This system saves approximately 31% over the traditional fluorescent system. Additionally the lamps need to be replaced less frequently, which also contributes to the additional maintenance savings.

GCRTA, Cleveland, Ohio

The city of Cleveland installed a 1320 LED lamp retrofit to LED Smarts rail lighting series on 40 of their Tokyu light rail vehicles. When tested against the previous florescent tubes that were installed, LED Smarts lighting matched or exceeded the previous florescent lighting levels.

Rider feedback has been very positive with some commenting that the lights definitely brighten up the vehicles and make them look much newer then before.

Port Authority

Pittsburgh

Starting in 2017, the Port Authority department began to install LED Smart, custom LED lighting system to retrofit their Siemens and CAF light rail cars. Utilizing the RLR series for their direct fixture retrofit. Installing more than 3000 LED RLR Series lights. Port Authority committed to a green path, that will reduce their carbon footprint and improve ridership.

The retrofit performed so far will see a savings of over 800,000W per day, which is estimated to save approximately almost $59,000 per year* on electricity alone. Additional savings will be seen in reduced maintenance labor costs over the products lifetime.

Hudson-Bergen Light Rail Transit4 (1).jp

Hudson Bergen Line

One of the earliest adopters of LED Lighting technology in the transportation industry NJ Transit, started to install the LED lighting system in 2009, on all of their Kinki Sharyo cars. Working through budget constraints, the whole fleet of Kinki Sharyo cars was eventually converted by 2015. Replacing almost 3,000 lamps within their fleet.
When tested against the previously installed fluorescent lighting system, they were able to save over 41,300Watts per day.

The retrofit of the full fleet will see a savings of over 240,000W, which is estimated to save approximately $21,000 per year* on electricity alone. Additional savings have been seen in the reduced maintenance and labor costs over the life of the products.

Calgary Transit led lighting

Calgary Transit

This retrofit was the first install of a LED interior lighting system on a light rail passenger vehicle in North America.

Over 2,700 tubes have been installed in Calgary Transit since the inception of the project. The initial lights have been on 24 hours a day, 7 days a week since installed for a total run time of over 24,000 hours.

During the first 7 years with annual testing performed, resulted in only a 8% reduction in lumens and .007% defective rate.

Edmonton ETS train crossing a bridge

Edmonton, ETS

Edmonton Transit is in the process of finishing up a over 850 lamp retrofit to LED Smarts rail lighting series on all 37 Siemens U2 vehicles during their overhaul.

Lamps have continued to function without any issues in temperatures as low as -50°C (-58°F) and up to as high as +40°C (104°F).

Operator and rider feedback has been positive commenting that 'the lights seem to light the car up brighter than fluorescent and make the car look much cleaner'.
